Ten of the best meals you've had. Hmmmm. You know, I don't have that sophisticated a palate that I would know the best meals. I know when I like something and when I don't. I know when something is cooked well and when it is crap. That doesn't help me recall ten "best" meals. This is more like my top ten favorite meals, I guess. And some are in context, that is for sure.
- Mom will sometimes make Paella on my birthday. Saffron, rice, chicken, shrimp, lobster, clams or mussels. So.Yummy.
- Mom's turkey dinner. We put marshmallows on our candied sweet potatoes. Yes, we do. Lima beans, the perfect gravy. It's a good thing I run a road race every Thanksgiving morning.
- We have a friend, Yutaka. He is from Japan and has lived with our very good friends, Cyndi and John and girls. Every year he spends an entire day preparing a huge spread of Sushi and it is better than any I've had anywhere, and I have had some good sushi.
- When it is summer, at a cookout, there is nothing like a well done hotdog on a toasted roll with mustard, relish, onions and some homemade baked beans. I can't remember the last time I had that, though. I should have one every summer. And add sauerkraut.
- I make a pasta with roasted squash and garlic, add romano and it is so yummy. I could eat the pound of pasta all by myself.
- When the family was in Maui and after a morning spent on the beach and in surfing lessons, we were ravenous. We had a great lunch and while I can't remember exactly what any of us had (and we sampled each other's meals thoroughly) we all agreed that it was probably one of the best meals we have had. The one outstanding memory we all have of that lunch is the iced tea. It was AWESOME!
- My nana's chop suey. She always made it for us for the day we arrived on summer vacation. It was the first thing we smelled coming in the door, and I looked forward to it every year.
- Erin was born in a hospital, rather unexpectedly as we planned to labor and deliver in a birthing center, but during labor we "risked out" and were moved to the labor and delivery floor of the nearby hospital. It was the hospital's tradition to provide a gourmet meal for the parents after the birth, but because we left for home about six hours after Erin's birth, they sent the meal with us and we reheated it later. It was Chicken Cordon Bleu with peas and probably potatoes, but I really remember the peas for some reason. Anyway, I was ravenous by the time Pete heated that meal up and it tasted better than anything at that moment. Funny how when you are really hungry just about anything can taste great. But that food really was pretty good.
- Then there are all the meals that someone else has prepared for me, those always taste good.
- The best meals are those shared with family and friends, the laughter or discussions, not even noticing the food. Those are the best meals.
Seventy-one to go. I'm looking forward to my next meal, breakfast. Yummy oatmeal with apples and raisins, cinnamon and maple syrup. Yummy.
Mmmm...you are making me SOO hungry!! :) They ALL sound worthy of a few pounds on the body habitus. Ice tea in Maui, is going on my bucket list.

I'm going to get oatmeal today and follow your recipe. That was one of my favorite meals as was lobster with you, too!

My husband was hesitant to try the MahiMahi in Maui. He was afraid that it would be "fishy." How could something that was caught 3 hours ago, sliced and cooked in front of us, and eaten immediately taste fishy? He had it, loved it and still raves about. There's something magical about food in Hawaii.
And I had to laugh about the hospital meal take home. I loved the pancakes at the hospital where I had The Boy. I could never duplicate them though. (Home 6 hours later?? Yikes, woman!)
